ARCHITECTURE AND COMICS:

THE VISUAL NARRATIVE [ARC60903]

Project 1a:

Building Narratives

Case Study : L45 Kurau Library, Bangsar

For this project, we students are to identify a building of their choice and research it, from finding the relevant architectural drawings to researching its unique cultural and historical stories.

Stories maybe be technical, historical, fictional, anecdotal, or autobiographical. Based on the research, students will assemble and design a 2-page comic about the selected building utilising design elements of the building or orthographical drawings of the building (plans, section, elevations or axonometric drawings) in the lyouts of their comics.

Blurring the lines between public and private space

The intention of the owner was to build a hostel for the students to experience what he had experienced when he was studying. At the same time a library for the community nearby to have a space to study. Mixing two entities into one.

But people tend to come for the building’s architecture instead of the knowledge. According to the volunteer, Karl there are many cases where people came in and take photo to advertise their products, students coming in and request the hostel’s students to bring them in to the private rooms to do research, people taking food from the fridge which belongs to the hostel’s students. All these issues started because there is no obvious separation between the private and public spaces.

This comic is describing how the private and public spaces are not properly separated, and is shown in a more fun and easy way.

The main character of the story, the stalker passed by L45 and saw this girl, a student staying in the hostel. He wants to know more about her so he followed her into the building. Throughout the process he is finding her, readers can see how the L45 building works. The only separation between public and private spaces is just a 150mm thick brick wall. Sound can be heard and there are no privacy for the hostel’s students. Most of the places are also accessible.

By reading this comic, hope that people will be aware of what is the feeling of the private users in the L45 and be more considerate, be quiet in the spaces and try not to disturb the others.

Cheers,

Celene

Project: 2A: The Architecture of Comics

Students will individually create their own proposal of a comic, describing the story covering one of the following themes:

• a concept or movement in Architecture/Design (e.g. “-ism” like modernism, futurism, etc)

• a streamlined retelling/adaptation of a significant event or historical vignette from Architecture/Design

• a story (or intertwined stories) that reflect ideas or lifestyles related to Architecture/Design concepts

The proposals will be presented with designs any characters, setting elements and a short synopsis identifying the concept/purpose of the story. You should also mention the style, tone and storyline of the proposed comic (may include references to precedents studies).

Students will then be grouped (2 or 3) and work on the works selected from the original presentations to create a finished 8-page black and white comic (A3).
