Building Science 1  {ARC 2413}

Project 1

Passive Design Strategies

Case Study : Education Resource Centre, National University of Singapore

In a group of 6, students are required to determine two major passive design strategies used by the selected building in hot and humid tropical climate. Education Resource Centre, National University of Singapore was our selected building and the passive design strategies covered are Sun Shading devives, Green Roofing and Natural Ventilatio.

Analysis is done via on-site analysis, observation through site visit externally and a series of data collection with digital softwares. Collection of data is then compiled and data recorded is further revised refering to the criteria stated in MS 1525 , UBBL and also the Green Building Index (GBI)to determine if the building achieves building thermal comfort level. Analysis boards produced are as shown below.

Throughout this project, the student team is able to identify and understand better about different passive design strategies and the principles.

Student also have deeper understanding of how heat flows from building and humans itself, making calculation to determine if the design is effective to achieve thermal comfort and provides better performance throughout the building.

Through the analysis study of the passive designs, it provides an opportunity to the students with real approach to the building industry. Students learnt about the prevailing technology and materials used for various stages of construction to achieve thermal comfort.  It is undoubtedly an enriching subject which allows students to further understand the science behind the making of all architecture, which also equips student with fundamental scientific knowledge and experience focusing on the analysis and control of natural environment and physical phenomena affecting the working of building inside out.
