Methods of Documentation & Measured Drawings

Introduction

This project is an on-site exercise where students have to sketch and document the physical and intangible qualities of a building as well as the immediate context of the site. It can be from an element as broad as the urban planning itself down to the smallest detail of the ornaments used in the building.

Some of the physical aspects may include building or structure such as a bridge; architectural elements such as windows, doors, five-foot ways; architectural features such as ornaments, keystone, arches over windows, carvings, tiles layout; construction details such as staircase, roof structure; the physical context – overall urban layout, street furniture; traditional transportation such the trishaw.

Project 1 ( Sketch Journal )

This is an individual on-site exercise that we are required to document and sketch the building as well as the site context. Students should start off from drawing the plans, elevations and sections of the building to understand the building better.

The building I got was The Lian Huat & Co shop house, at 138, Lebuh Carnarvon Georgetown Penang. It is a traditional shop house combining the "Southern Chinese" electic style and also the "Art Deco" electic style. This old shop house is a double-storey shop house and it has three covered air wells and also three halls.

Throughout this assignment, I learnt a lot about the old shop houses, the history of the building style and also the way to measure correctly. But most importantly, if it isn't this subject I will not have the chance to have a better understanding of Penang shop house and i really appreciate the way the older people think and how they put it into the building.

Below is my sketch journal for this project.

Project 2 ( Measured Drawing & Model)

For this project we were to produce a series of measured drawing for the Lian Huat & Co building. The requirements for the measured drawings are key plan, location plan, site plan incorporating the roof plan, floor plans, elevations, sections, site sections and also exploded isometric / axonometric.

This is the first time I learnt to use Autocad to draw a building, thanks to my senior and friends we manage to finish the drawings on time. On the other hand, they have also helped me to solve a lot of problems I faced using Autocad.

Here is a link showing the 42 drawings we have done.

Project 3 ( Report & Video Documentation )

Project 3 requires to produce a report consisting a set of drawings of the building measured and it should include the importance of this building from various aspects, like architectural, historical and cultural. We are also required to produce a presentation, photobook and a website for this building.

To find the information about this building was the most difficult part. Although Lian Huat & Co building is not a registered building but with the help of the current owner, Mr. Teow Seng Nam, the architect, Mr.Tan Yeow Wooi and also the representative from Georgetown World Heritage Inc, Mr.Muhammad Hijas we manage to collect many datas about the building's history and also the architectural style, element and functions.

While me and my groupmates are doing the report, we explained the architectural details and elements regarding the Lian Huat & Co building, like the design principles and elements applied on the building. Then, filtering and editing the photos for the photobook is not as easy as I thought but we managed to do it with the power of group work. We managed to recognize the architectural historic structure while doing the report and photobook.

In this project 2, we were also asked to produced a 1:50 model in the provided period of time. We choose to make on side of the wall using perspex in order to allow people to see through and have a look in the details inside the building. Ornaments and details of the building, such as the windows, air vents, columns, railing, arches and others are carved and also lasered into our model.

This is the progress and also the final product of our model.
