Bachelor of Science (Honor) in Architecture
Culture and History
This module is about the chronological survey of the developments of Western architecture from the beginning of time to the period of Enlightenment, with consideration of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors which have influenced the design of buildings. These issues are explored with reference to major contemporary examples and the work and philosophy of significant exponents.
Through this module, we get to :
1.Recognize and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, styles and periods.
2. Exemplify, classify and compare the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally.
3. Differentiate the ways in which many varied factors contribute to the development of form.
4. Produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.
5. Develop, elaborate and devise design concept by means of artistic, systematic, creative, and innovative intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships as integration with Studio 1 design project.
Projects
This project focuses on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas. Through the study of existing buildings, students are able to communicate and expand their own architectural vocabulary and develop design concepts. In a group of 4, students are required to conduct precedent study analysis on specific building through drawing, model-making, on-line forum discussion and verbal presentations. This precedent study analysis should help clarify the research question of “why” that specific building is historically, culturally and architecturally importance; and “how” the design concepts derived from that particular building can be developed and expanded to be creatively and innovatively integrated into their Studio 1 design project.

Project 1 - Online Group Forum
Through the active on-line discussion forum, students even outside class session will be able to exchange views, share and debate the knowledge derived from the precedent studies to best grasp as well as to encourage a comprehensive analysis of the underlying conceptual ideas of the building.
Project 2 - Analysis Presentation Board
An analysis presentation board consists of illustrative and abstractive diagrams, drawings and text. The drawings should include actual and conceptual design ideas of floor plans, building sections, analysis diagrams and sketches expressing clarity and in-depth investigation of the precedent studies. The drawings should be composed on one A2 board only and strictly hand-drawn and hand-written.
I have choosen number 4 for my presentation board. Number 4 is about Spatial Organization analysis (i. Spatial planning & Siting, ii. Building sequence and process, iii. Public vs. private, iv. Axes, v. Symmetry & balance, vii. Repetitive to unique, viii. Additive and subtractive, ix. Hierarchy)

Project 3 - 3D Abstraction Model
3D Abstraction Model is a model expressing the details of some aspect or part of a building. Only the most significance and relevance is extracted and simplified in order to express the importantand noteworthy design concept analysis of the building.
So we have choosen the front facade of the building to be our abstraction model.
