"Shelter For One" is a project designed which requires students to understand how skeletal construction works in real life building with different materials and construction methods.

In a group of 6, we are assigned to construct an one-to-one real life shelter with understanding of structural components and distribution of load. The shelter must be elevated at least 13 cm (5 inches) from the ground and only recycled materials were allowed.

We started with the idea where the shelter is not only usable but also protable and easy to bring along. So we used the concept of an open book, we came out with two frames with bracing beside and having a base below and above making the shelter stronger.

In the end of the project, the shelter was showcased and to be tested by lectures along with presentation of how the design was developed.

Project 1 : Skeletal Construction "A Shelter For One"

Building Construction 2 {ARC 2513}

With this project opportunity, we were able to learn, identify and do research on the building construction details and methods used for skeletal construction. Diagrams of sketches with descriptive explanation are used in the documentation.

Aside from the group work, each of the student in the group is required to generate an clear drawing of different details of the building. The drawings is needed to show the construction details which meets the structural system used by the selected building.

Student is required to identify and do research on the building construction methods used for both surface and solid construction according to the part selected by the student indiviually. Drawing generated with annotation of construction details are as shown.

Project 2 : Understanding Forces in Solid Structures & Surface Structures

Commerzbank-Arena, Frankfurt

In this project, we are required to propose buildings with at least two combination of skeletal, solid and surface structures and conduct research on the structural construction methods and systems used in the buildings.

We were then required to produce a scaled model to show the structural system used for the selected building and also a detailed model on the construction system of the structure. In the end of the project, an A4 booklet explaining the selected building, structural systems, modeling processes and data are compiled for presentation.

We have chosen Commerzbank-Arena as our building as there is this openable roof at the middle of the stadium, projecting the tensile structure. And we managed to did a sectional model for the stadium and a small detail model showing the concept of the building.
