Building Material

This module intends to inform the student of the relevant visual and physical properties of a wide range of

building materials. It also encompass the broad environmental debate by including energy saving and recycled

materials. For each material the module describes the manufacturing process, salient properties and typical uses

of these materials, with the aim of ensuring their appropriate application within the awareness of the suitability of

the physical and chemical properties as well as its ecological impact. Students will undergo a series of

continuous assessments such as project and tests to ascertain the objective and outcome of the module is

achieved.

Project 1 - Space Out- the material CUBE

The intent of this project is to introduce students to Building Materials which are currently used in the industry.

This project is designed as an introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the local construction

industry. Students are required to construct cubes using the listed material to explore and understand building

making in relation to materials, design considerations of material according to their properties and to finally

understand how the intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material factor in a design process.

We were ask to produce a wood cube and a paper cube. For the paper cube I have choosen the material "mounting board", as for the wood cube, i choose "popsicle stick" as the material.

Project 2 - Mood Board: Experiential Exploration of Space & Materials

This project introduces students to various types of material that are applied in existing buildings locally in

response to local contexts such as climate, concept, aesthetics, structure, occupancy and environmental issues.

Emphasis is given to identification and understanding the effects of material, chemical and physical properties.

This assignment is divided into two parts, the first one is a group assignment. I am in the same group as Lee Chaer Shean, Pua Zhi Qin, Pua Kai Jing and Chan Boon Haw.

We have chosen Jibby & Co which is situated in front of Empire shopping mall in Subang because Jibby & Co has a very unique interior design. The architecture is also very special.

Through this assignment, we have to do a lot of research about the material there. We need to know about the properties of the material. After this assignment I have really learnt a lot about the building materials.

Other than the group assignment, we are also asked to produce a individual assignment. In this assignment we have to go to a site and do research about the site.

This assignment is different from the group assignment because it no longer want us to study about the building material, but it wants us to experience the space and write out the feeling when we are there, about how the building materials give the space a story, an experience.

I have went to Kula Lumpur's Jalan Tunku Rahman Chow Kit and chosen a dentist's clinic as my site for research.

The building is very old, it's quite scary when i walk into the private space because it is quite dark. But through this assignment I have learnt that we have to preserve the old building that are still there so that more people can get to experience the old building.
