Project 1 Self-Expression through Object

This ice-breaking design project is an introduction to elements and principles of visual art through designing a

mask. A mask is an object normally worn on the face for protection, disguise, performance or entertainment.

In contrast with its main usage to covering and hiding, here you are required to use that for revealing.

You [students] will dig deeply inside yourself, remove the ‘masks’ of the characters you are wearing, identify

your true self and then design a mask that reveals your most powerful identity.

All my personality are related to the element "fire", therefore I've choosen it as the theme of my mask.

My personalities are "ACTIVE", "ENERGETIC", "CLUMSY", "DO THOUGHTLESS ACTIONS". All this characteristic is the same as the fire.

I've also choosen the phoenix to be my study model, phoenix is a chinese traditional creature which represnts fire. I used its feather as a part of my model. The tail too.

When all of them are put together

To make the feather, I've used golden wire which represent a tough side of mine and wrapped it up with cloth(elastic) because I always cover up the tough side of mine. The lace that I've used to cover the face is to show the femanine side of mine. And there are a few ribbons coming out, representing the phoenix's tail, showing that the fire is leaking out. This whole mask is made using only one technique, which is SEWING.
