Effective Public Communication
Introduction
Effective Public Communication (EPC) is one of the module that we students from FNBE required to take during our semester two.
Through this module, we are able to learn and delves into the basic concepts and principles in the daily application of interpersonal and group communication skills both for personal and professional development. Course components include models and concepts within interpersonal, group and organizational communication such as perception, listening, group decision making, leadership and conflict.
In this module, we are required to accomplish three task which are the class test, an individual essay and a group comic.
Task 1 - Class Test
Aim and accomplishment :
The intended learning outcome of this task is to test us students about our understanding on the chapters that we have learn in the class.
We are required to study Chapter 1-5 in the text book 'Human Communication' by Pearson and also Chapter 6 on Conflict and Negotiation from 'Human Communication' by Tubbs and Moss. We also have to watch some videos that are related to effective public communication. The examples of the videos are Joy Luck Club, The Bridget Jones Diary, Listen, Listen, Listen and William Mury on Negotiation.
For this class test, we are allowed to bring our text book in with us to refer.
Reflection :
After this class test, I understand that memorizing is not the most important thing. Most of the students used to memorize the notes before they do their exam. But they did not realize that the most important thing for studying is UNDERSTAND.
From this open book test, I realize that in order to do well in this exam we have to understand all the theories that we have been taught and not memorizing it. After looking through the video clips that we are asked to watched I notice that there are a lot of verbal and non verbal communication happening in my daily life that I never bother before.
Task 2 - Individual Essay
Aim and Accomplishment :
The intended learning outcome of this task is to test the students on the understanding of a topic and the ability to explain the principles of communication and behaviour in analyzing interaction with others in essay form.
We are asked to choose one from four topic given from teacher and write an essay about the topic. We have to do research on the topic from different kind of source like the internet, books from library and also our text book. At last, an essay which is 800-1000 words long is produce.
Reflection :
For this essay, I have choosen the topic 'Differences between Assimilation, Accomodation and Separation Strategy' as my topic. This three strategies are all under the topic 'Acculturation'. In order to understand more and to write out this essay, I have to do a lot of research on it. After finish doing this task, I get a better understanding on assimilation, accomodation and separation strategy. All these research improve my knowledge about the topic above.

Task 3 - Group Comic
Aim and Accomplishment :
The intended learning outcome of this task is to test the understanding of the students on specific chapter.
This is a group assignment, and we were to form a group of five. My group consist of Edward, Kelvin, Chee Yong, Boon Haw and me, Xiao Wen. We choose chapter eight as our topic, 'Small Group Communication' is our topic and we have to draw a comic from the theories in the chapter. This comic is to be drawn out on five or more A3 papers and ideas must be shown out in clear and appropriate English.
Reflection :
In this assignment, we did a comic based on the topic 'Small Group Communication'. We have used the theories like, emergent group, cohesiveness, trust, democratic leader and other theories. After looking at the examples that are given by our lecture, Mr. Woon; we are inspired and shocked about what the seniors can do, so we put quite a lot of effort on this assignment. Everyone in my group have their own strengthness so we did this assignment based on our own skills. We worked out very well and I really enjoyed this assignment. :)

Reflection
After learning this module, I learned a lot and I have a better understanding about effective public communication. Public communication is not an easy thing to be learnt but after six months of hardwork paid off I am starting to understand the verbal and non verbal communication that exist in my daily life.
After doing the second task, I realize that people from different culture have different kind of background and when they were to stay in a different country they will have to use different strategy to blend themself in. This kind of situation always happen by my side but i never really notice about it until I have done this assignment.
All theese assignments above and the classes that are given by my lecture, Mr. Woon really teached me a lot and given me a better understanding on public communication. I really appreciate the knowledge that Mr. Woon have shared with us and Thank you so much teacher. :)
