Project 3: EPIC HOME-Children's Dormitory

In Malaysia, the school dropout rate among orang asli children have traditional been high predominantly due to the lack of access to pre-school education and the lack of peer and family support.

SEMOA is a registered NGO, supporting Orang Asli in several states. About 5 years ago, SEMOA started at Tras, tiny town between Bentong & Raub a hostel with a few children. Therefore, the children have a place to stay in town and have access to Government’s School.

The Orang Asli Education Center welcomes currently 56 children aged 5-17 years. There are a few adults & moms hired to look after the children.

These children are cared for wholly by SEMOA staff, from daily meals, laundry, transportation and tuition. SEMOA hopes that these efforts will ensure that students stay in school until they enter a tertiary education system.

As part of the orang asli education centre, we were to develop a children’s dormitory at Pahang.

This dormitory must function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living in community, sleeping, dressing, studying, storage, rest, washing and such for 24 childrens within the built up space of 150 square meter.

creating a space where there are 6 beds in a space, the bed is on top and there is a table below to study. But then i realize that the space created is quite odd if i use the stacking idea, therefore this module is took out

toilet idea

i wanted to create a separate toilet, but i realize that if i pllace the toilet at one side the children from the other side will have difficulties going to the toilet at night or when it is raining. So i choose to built in toilets.

i wanted to create a space where the planes that connect the upper and lower modules will be cut out and a ladder will be place there for the kids to climb up to the service area

third concept model

third concept model

at this stage, i separated the service area out(toilet, study area, laundry, ironing area etc) . One system will have three modules, two bedrooms and one service area. Each bedrooms have enough spaces for 3-4 children, therefore all 6-8 children will share the one service area.

I subtract a part of the building in, in order to make use of the space (to place the stairs, to hang clothes etc.)
